2015 Outdoor Winter Sports Activities In Montreal

January 27, 2015

Beat Cabin Fever

Feeling a little cooped up? There’s plenty of fun to have here in Montreal during the winter. Don’t let the cold or snow get to you, bundle up and get out there for some true north strong and free! From winter activities, to festivals and competitions, here’s a few things going on this month in Montreal:

Sledding & Snowtubing

Ask any Canadian what they loved to do as a child in the winter and chances are they’ll tell you sledding! Fun for kids and adults alike, sledding has taken many forms in recent years, all of which you can try your hand at here in Montreal. A couple of parks to try sledding at this winter are Parc Mont Royal (tube rentals all winter), Parc Jean Drapeau, Parc Jarry in the Park Extension area, Du Pélican and Joseph Paré in Rosemont also have sledding areas.

Montreal Skating Rinks

One benefit of subzero temperatures is all the skating rinks in Montreal! From your downtown hotel suite you can easily access a variety of outdoor and indoor skating rinks using public transit or by foot. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Beaver Lake, atop Mont Royal this is a cozy spot to hit the ice. You can rent skates and lockers here too. Keep in mind it’s busy on the weekends.
  • Bonsecours Basin, right downtown in the Old Port area you can rent skates and lockers. Beautiful spot at night with all the lights! Easy to get to from downtown hotel suites.
  • Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park, no skate rental but it has free admission! 3 hockey rinks and one freestyle rink.
  • Jeanne Mance Park, located at Parc Ave., corner of Mont-Royal, no rentals but free as well.
  • Le 1000 De La Gauchetière, indoor skating, rentals and lockers! If it’s too cold out, try skating indoors.

Montreal Spartan Polar Hero Race

February 21st 2015. Held in Park Angrignon, this 5km foot race takes participants through 25 wintry obstacles to test your will and strength. Beginners and experts are welcome, and it’s a lot of fun to watch as well. First wave of runners, Elite Men & Women start at 9:30 am, with departures every 20 minutes afterward. Don’t forget the after party!

Montreal’s Ice Fishing Village

Take in one of Quebec’s favorite pastimes, ice fishing! Try it out for yourself at the ice fishing village located in the Old Port from January 14th to March 31, 2015 (weather permitting). Reservations are recommended, all equipment and heated ice fishing shelters provided. You do need a fishing license in order to fish, but watching is fun too.

Barbegazi, Winter Action Sports Festival

February 14th & 15th 2015. Held at the Esplanade Sun Life Financial in the Olympic Park, Barbegazi is a full-throttle, action-packed, winter sports extravaganza.
